BOSTON, Mass. — In July of 2013, CJI released Creating an Effective Pretrial Program: A Toolkit for Practitioners. The toolkit was commissioned by Californians for Safety and Justice as part of a series supporting the effective implementation of Criminal Justice Realignment in California.
As local counties seek effective cost-effective solutions for managing local jail populations, improved pretrial decision making has the potential to reduce unnecessary incarceration, lower costs, and protect the rights of defendants, all while maintaining public safety.
This toolkit offers practical guidance on developing an effective continuum of pretrial options.
