Increasingly, organizations that provide supervision of individuals in the criminal and juvenile justice system are recognizing the importance of giving staff the tools to respond to client behavior in a graduated manner, incorporating both sanctions and incentives, to support behavior change and reduce recidivism. This training, based on Core Correctional Practices, teaches staff how to effectively use graduated responses with the individuals they supervise. The training is tailored to each setting, incorporating any site-specific graduated responses policies and procedures.
Training description:
- Research on what works in the criminal justice system highlights the importance of appropriately responding to positive and negative behavior to support pro-social behavioral change, given that punishment alone is not an effective approach.
- Appropriate response includes proportionate, consistent, and timely consequences for behavior.
- Graduated responses enhance interactions between staff and clients, using every contact to promote and model pro-social behaviors.
- This training incorporates the PEI and CIS/CCP as a foundation, then focuses on how graduated responses can be used effectively in interactions with clients.
- The curriculum incorporates practice opportunities utilizing graduated responses, allowing participants to feel confident using the skills in their roles
