"Selling out our safety"

"Probation officers protect us, much like police officers do. O’Brien and his Beacon Hill pals weren’t just abusing our trust and our tax dollars. They were messing with our safety.

It’s easy to lose sight of the actual work of the Probation Department amid the breathtaking fraud and epic patronage revealed in last week’s special counsel report, which was prompted by a Globe Spotlight investigation.

So let’s refresh our memories. Probation officers supervise men and women who are serving sentences in the community, to prevent them from offending again. If they do their jobs right, they can hold back waves of new inmates and new victims. They can save lives, not to mention millions in prosecution and prison costs. This is not the sort of vocation with which you play games..."
